Samsung Wins First Place in World’s Largest AI Security Technology Competition

Samsung has won first place in the world’s largest AI security technology competition, AI Cyber Challenge (AIxCC). The finals were held on August 8 in Las Vegas, where the Korean firm’s team outperformed everyone to secure a $4 million prize. This is a big achievement for Samsung, showing its advancement in detecting and addressing software security vulnerabilities using AI.

Samsung’s Team Atlanta secures top spot in DARPA AI cyber challenge

Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) hosted the competition with a total prize pool of $22.5 million. Samsung participated in the competition as Team Atlanta. It is a joint team led by Samsung Research, the Device eXperience (DX) Division’s advanced research institute. They collaborated with security experts from leading global universities, including Georgia Tech, KAIST, and POSTECH.

The competition began in 2023 and spanned two years — 40 teams entered the semifinals last year, and 7 teams in the final this year. Team Atlanta made it to the finals thanks to its exceptional technical capabilities. They were the sole participant to detect an unintended vulnerability in the semifinals (this flaw was not part of the competition). In the finals, Samsung once again proved world-class security technology capabilities.

As for the evaluation process, the final test measured how well each team’s AI could analyze software source code for vulnerabilities and automatically apply security patches. There was no human intervention, meaning AI systems had to work alone to detect bugs and then fix them. Thanks to Samsung’s expertise in sophisticated AI security technology, Team Atlanta won first place in the competition.

“Samsung Electronics was able to achieve meaningful results by demonstrating its AI-based security technology capabilities at a global security technology competition,” said Taesoo Kim, VP of Samsung Research, who led Team Atlanta. “We will continue to expand collaboration with global security experts to further advance Samsung Electronics’ security technology proficiency.”

The Korean firm now plans to develop its AI-powered next-generation security solutions. The goal is to continuously improve product and service security by autonomously identifying and mitigating security vulnerabilities.
