Galaxy Z Fold 8 May Face Pressure From Another Competitor, and It’s Not Apple

Samsung has long dominated the US foldables market, but the Galaxy Z Fold 8 will face pressure from two additional competitors. First, Apple may finally debut a foldable iPhone this year, which would likely become Samsung’s biggest rival. Second, Motorola could launch a book-style foldable to compete directly with the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
Motorola is coming with razr fold to take on Galaxy Z Fold 8
Noted tipster Evan Blass shared a slide revealing Motorola’s plans to launch a razr fold, which would be the company’s first book-style foldable. In simpler terms, it would directly rival the Galaxy Z Fold 8. Motorola already makes flip-style foldables, so this would mark a new form factor for the Lenovo-owned company.
The slide deck also claims that the razr fold will offer “brilliant displays, intelligent AI, and an advanced boundary-breaking camera system.” Motorola puts particular emphasis on the camera, saying it will set “a new standard… in a foldable device.”

Quite honestly, that sounds, and reads, overly exaggerated. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 (review), launched in 2024, already features an impressive camera setup for a foldable phone, including a 200MP rear sensor. If anything, Samsung will further improve the camera with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8. Motorola, meanwhile, doesn’t have much of a reputation for delivering groundbreaking camera tech, unlike brands such as Vivo and Oppo.
That said, it will be interesting to see how the razr fold competes with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and a potential foldable iPhone. It will also be worth watching whether the Galaxy Z TriFold manages to gain any traction in the US. For now, it’s unclear when Motorola plans to launch its book-style foldable, or whether it’ll arrive before or after the Galaxy Z Fold 8. We’ll keep you updated as more information emerges.
