Samsung’s next-generation book-style foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, is now official. Alongside some meaningful upgrades across multiple segments, it brings a key change to the camera department. The Korean firm has finally ditched its aging 4MP under-display selfie camera in favor of a 10MP punch-hole unit. This seems to be the perfect approach for enhanced photography through the front camera as well.

Galaxy Z Fold 7 ditches UDC for 10MP punch-hole camera

The seventh-generation foldable device arrives with a sleek profile, measuring just 4.2mm thick and weighing 215g. Its larger 8.0-inch main screen makes the device stand out in the market. For pro-grade photography, the device also borrows the powerful 200MP camera sensor from the Ultra flagship. Notably, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 marks the end of the under-display camera (UDC) in its foldable lineup.

It’s actually good news if you were hoping for better front-camera performance from a foldable device. Samsung has now implemented a 10MP camera sensor within a punch-hole cutout on the main foldable screen. Introduced with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 in 2021, the Korean firm continued using UDC technology in the Galaxy Z Fold 4, Fold 5, and Fold 6.

Of course, Samsung made incremental improvements to image quality with each generation. However, it seems there was little room left for meaningful enhancement, so the company decided to adopt a traditional camera implementation — a proven approach for better photo quality. In fact, the Korean giant had been leaning in that direction since the introduction of the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition last year — it dropped the UDC from the main screen.

The newly adopted 10MP front-facing camera features an f/2.2 aperture, 1.12μm pixel size, and a 100-degree field of view. With Samsung’s next-generation ProVisual Engine, the selfie camera processes images faster, delivering sharper photos. While the punch-hole on the main screen may slightly affect the immersive experience, it’s a welcome change for greatly improved image quality.
