Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 Embrace Qi2, But Without Magnets

A few days ago, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) confirmed that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will support Qi2 wireless charging. However, much like the Galaxy S25 Ultra, the foldable only offers partial support. It requires a compatible case to enable magnetic alignment. Unsurprisingly, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will follow the same path, skipping a fully integrated Qi2 experience.

The WPC listing mentions a Samsung device with the model number SM-A846U, believed to be the Galaxy Z Flip 7 — we know the Flip 7 has the model number SM-F766, but the WPC appears to be masking it. While this confirms Qi2 support on paper, it’s actually version 2.1.0 of the Qi standard, which differs from the full-fledged Qi2 implementation seen on some rival devices.

Here’s the catch: Qi 2.1.0 doesn’t require built-in magnets in the phone itself. Instead, magnetic alignment, which is one of Qi2’s core features, is delegated to compatible magnetic cases. That means the Flip 7 and Fold 7 will skip on-board magnets, much like the Galaxy S25 series. You get faster wireless charging with magnetic accessory attachment functions when you put on a supported case.

While this decision could reduce production costs and device thickness (and weight too), it also means users won’t get the same snappy magnetic alignment as with Apple’s MagSafe or true Qi2 devices that include integrated magnets. This “half-baked” approach provides compatibility with Qi2 chargers, but not the full magnetic charging experience users might expect.

It shouldn’t be a dealbreaker for anyone, as most of us always put a case on our phones. However, with full Qi2 functionality delegated to cases, your choices are limited unless you don’t need Qi2 wireless charging. Samsung should launch the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 in July. The Galaxy Z Flip FE and Galaxy Watch 8 should also debut at the same event.
