Samsung Justifies Galaxy S25 Edge’s Small Battery and Missing Zoom Camera

Samsung had to make some compromises to achieve an ultra-thin profile of just 5.8mm on the Galaxy S25 Edge. The two major trade-offs are a smaller battery (3,900mAh) and the lack of a telephoto zoom camera. A company executive recently talked about these concerns, suggesting that it focused on user experience over specs.

Samsung describes Galaxy S25 Edge as the “Goldilocks”

A few weeks ago, Blake Gaiser, Samsung Electronics America’s director of smartphone product management, spoke with Tom’s Guide in an interview. Gaiser describes the Galaxy S25 Edge as the “Goldilocks” of smartphones, meaning you get flagship performance and camera quality without reaching the price point of the Galaxy S25 Ultra.

Samsung’s target audience is consumers who want a new model between the big Ultra and the Plus models. These people want a large screen and a flagship camera, but they don’t like the S-Pen or the weight that comes with the Ultra model.

Gaiser said the company considers the Galaxy S25 Edge a true flagship that does not compromise on the things that are really important to buyers. For example, the company focuses on durability with a titanium frame, integrated Snapdragon 8 Elite for solid performance, and a 200MP camera for pro-grade photography.

Trade-offs in the Galaxy S25 Edge

Speaking of the telephoto zoom unit trade-offs, Gaiser said that the company has made significant improvements in camera tech in recent years. With the implementation of AI, the camera can now understand what you are taking photos of to give you a perfect shot. Maybe he is pointing to the 10x AI Zoom capability of the Galaxy S25 Edge that enhances details of distant subjects.

He further said the most popular zooms that customers use are the 0.6X (for wide shots), 1X, 2X, and 3X.
