Galaxy Z Fold 7 Certified with Qi2 Wireless Charging Before Launch

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 will support Qi2 wireless charging, a new listing from the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) reveals. Samsung’s upcoming foldable is certified under the Qi 2.1.0 standard. However, it is unlikely to deliver the complete Qi2 experience. Much like the Galaxy S25 Ultra, it will likely offer a scaled-down version — known as “Qi2 Ready” — without integrated magnets for true magnetic alignment.

The WPC listing (via 9to5Google) shows a “coming soon” Samsung device with the model number SM-D637U. While that model number doesn’t follow Samsung’s usual conventions — the Galaxy Z Fold 7 bears the model number SM-F966 — it aligns with previous anomalies. The WPC listed the Galaxy Z Fold 5 (SM-F946) as SM-D617D and the Galaxy Z Fold SE (SM-F958) as SM-D269N.

These inconsistencies suggest the SM-D637U is indeed the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Samsung might be using alternate identifiers to mask the upcoming device ahead of the official announcement. If true, it will be the first Galaxy foldable with any form of Qi2 support. However, based on reports and expectations surrounding its slim profile, the Fold 7 may not offer the full-blown experience that Qi2 promises.

Instead, the new foldable will likely be “Qi2 Ready,” meaning that it requires compatible magnetic cases to enable full functionality. The device won’t include built-in magnets for perfect charger alignment like Apple’s MagSafe system, but it still supports Qi2 chargers and accessories with a compatible case.

Since most of us put a case on our phones, this approach makes the device thin and lightweight without major compromises. The Qi2 Ready label was introduced as part of the Qi 2.1.0 specification for this very reason. It allows devices to pass certification even if they offload magnetic alignment to external accessories. Samsung should unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 in July 2025.
