Samsung may finally breathe a sigh of relief as the US government has lowered the reciprocal tariff on Vietnamese goods to 20%, down from the originally proposed 46%. While the new tariff rate is still high, it will prevent the company’s situation from worsening, as it manufactures a large number of smartphones in Vietnam and ships them to the United States.

The Trump administration lowers the tariff on Vietnamese goods to 20%

In April this year, the US government announced reciprocal tariffs on all trading partners. However, the Trump administration postponed its implementation for 90 days and began discussions with the governments of different countries. It recently struck a trade deal with Vietnam, under which Vietnamese goods would face a 20% tariff. Interestingly, this comes just as the 90-day pause is about to end.

“It is my Great Honor to announce that I have just made a Trade Deal with the Socialist Republic of Vietnam,” Trump said on Truth Social (via Reuters). The Trump administration was originally planning to impose a 46% tariff on Vietnamese goods, which raised concerns for the Korean tech giant Samsung. The company’s global manufacturing hub in Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam, produces smartphones, tablets, and wearable devices in large quantities.

Now that the US government has reduced the tariff to 20%, Samsung will avoid the worst-case scenario and should be able to maintain cost-effective production for its global supply chain. Meanwhile, it planned to mitigate the impact of the tariff by increasing the production volume of its upcoming Galaxy foldable devices for the US market. The idea is to ship new devices to its US hub ahead of the tariff implementation so that consumers will not face higher prices.

Note that the Trump administration has yet to reveal the full list of goods subject to the 20% tariff. There has also been chatter that President Donald Trump may impose a 25% tariff on smartphones. Only time will tell if this turns out to be the case, but it could greatly impact Samsung’s pricing strategy for its devices.
