After months of leaks and official teasers, Samsung’s first-gen extended reality (XR) headset, codenamed Project Moohan (meaning “Infinite” in Korean), could debut next month. The company reportedly plans to unveil the device via an online event on October 21. Sales begin immediately after launch, but in limited quantities.

Samsung’s XR headset finally has a launch date

Samsung is expected to position its XR headset between Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta’s Quest 3. According to the Korean media, the device may cost around $2,000, much lower than the Vision Pro’s $3,499 price tag. It features micro-OLED panels from Samsung Display, delivering an ultra-high resolution of about 3,800 ppi, surpassing the Vision Pro at 3,391 ppi.

Project Moohan is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset and comes with 16GB of RAM, ensuring smooth performance for demanding XR content and applications. Like Apple, Samsung’s solution will support prescription lenses for users who require vision adjustments. Users can separately buy custom lenses that fit into the headset without affecting its functionality.

The idea is to lower the entry barrier for premium XR headsets with a more affordable price and practical features. In fact, Samsung designed its headset with comfort and content usability as top priorities, addressing issues like weight and app support that hindered the Vision Pro’s early adoption. The device integrates multimodal AI, supporting input through voice, gaze, gestures, and contextual recognition.

Alongside compatibility with existing Android apps, Samsung and Google have built native apps and services for the XR headset. Partnerships with OpenXR, Unity, and others further add support for gaming, video, productivity, education, and more. However, Samsung still doesn’t see many takers for the product. Initial shipments are expected at around 100,000 units, with production volume to be adjusted depending on early demand.

Samsung delayed its launch to ensure quality

The report says Samsung originally planned to unveil the XR headset in late September. However, it delayed the debut for final marketing and quality checks. A recent Camera Assistant update revealed that you can use Galaxy phones to capture 3D photos and videos and view them on the headset. With top-notch build quality, premium features, and an affordable price, industry watchers expect Project Moohan to give the XR market a significant boost. Stay tuned for the official launch next month.
