Last year, Samsung tried a new strategy with its Flip foldables by launching two models: the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and a more affordable Flip 7 FE. The latter was essentially a rebadged Flip 6 on a budget, but the experiment didn’t gain much traction. Now, the company may be exploring a completely different idea for its future Flip phones. A newly published Samsung patent reveals a clamshell foldable featuring a dual-display setup on the front.

Samsung patents a Flip design with two screens on the front

The design was discovered by 91Mobiles in documents published on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The patent images show a foldable phone that closely resembles Samsung’s current flip-style devices, such as the Galaxy Z Flip 7. However, it features two separate cover screens. In addition to the main cover display and dual cameras, the design appears to include a small circular secondary screen.

Since launching the first-gen Flip several years back, Samsung has consistently improved the size and functionality of the cover screen. Last year’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 has the biggest external display yet, and it can run almost every app. You can do a lot of things without unfolding the device.

This patented design, meanwhile, leans more toward a style statement than functionality. Of course, the secondary screen could act as a low-power always-on display, showing basic information like time, battery level, or notifications without turning on the larger cover screen. It could also function as a dedicated notification indicator. However, it also makes the main cover display less useful.

That said, this design remains only a patent concept. As with most patents, there is no guarantee this concept will turn into a real product. However, if Samsung decides to develop it further, the design could eventually appear in a future model of the Galaxy Z Flip series.
