Samsung continues its efforts in advancing medical technology, particularly in ultrasound-based solutions. The company’s subsidiary, Samsung Medison, has recently teamed up with a US-based firm, HistoSonics. This will allow the Korean firm to improve diagnosis and cancer treatment.

As part of the partnership, Samsung Medison’s high-resolution ultrasound device, the R20, will link with HistoSonics’ Edison system. The companies plan to send clear ultrasound images from the R20 to Edison in real time. They will also improve the system’s image signal processing and interface to handle the ultrasound waves used during treatment.

The linked Edison system treats tumors using a method called histotripsy. It focuses ultrasound waves on the tumor to create tiny bubbles that collapse. The process is noninvasive, so it does not require an incision, letting patients recover faster. Thanks to real-time imaging, doctors can see the treatment area clearly. As such, the overall procedure becomes not only accurate but also safe.

Both companies also aim to explore new markets through this connected system. They hope to strengthen their competitiveness in the field of ultrasound-based cancer treatment. “This collaboration is an important turning point that connects diagnosis and treatment based on the scalability of ultrasound technology,” said Yu Gyu-tae, head of Samsung Medison Co. “We will expand strategic partnerships with promising global corporations to diversify our business portfolio and secure future growth engines”.

Apart from cancer treatment, Samsung Medison also offers solutions for women’s health. From fetal development to menopause, these solutions help women at every stage of life. For example, the HERA Z20 device helps doctors manage health issues from adolescent gynecology and fertility to maternity and aging. Speaking of some integrated features, Ophthalmic Artery can detect early systemic vasoconstriction, HeartAssist monitors cardiovascular conditions in real time, and Live ViewAssist reduces diagnostic time.
