Samsung recently unveiled the Galaxy XR, which hit the shelves shortly after. It packs a punch, running on the Android XR operating system, and comes in at nearly half the price of the Apple Vision Pro. Much like the Vision Pro, the Galaxy XR also uses micro-OLED displays, built exclusively with Sony’s OLED-on-Silicon (OLEDoS) tech.

Samsung Electronics has reportedly ordered the Display unit to make OLEDoS panels

Reports from Korean media now suggest that Samsung Display has entered mass production of OLEDoS panels. The report mentions that Samsung Display has received orders from Samsung Electronics and has since begun mass-producing OLEDoS panels, which might be used in the Galaxy XR’s successor. Alternatively, this could signal the rumored expansion into more regions.

The Galaxy XR features a highly advanced 1.3-inch 4K OLEDoS display. It supports a resolution of 3,552 × 3,840 pixels and an impressive pixel density of 4,032 PPI. The panel is designed to deliver 95% coverage of the DCI-P3 color spectrum. The report cites an “industry official familiar with the matter” saying that Samsung Display has “passed the reliability assembled that was difficult and received delivery approval.”

What happens next

Sony supplied 4K OLEDoS panels for Apple’s Vision Pro, while China Vision provided displays for DJI’s Goggles 2. BOE and its subsidiary BMOT are also preparing to supply OLEDoS panels for Meta’s Quest devices by 2026. With Samsung Display now entering the competition, the OLEDoS market is expected to grow rapidly.

Market research firm Omdia predicts that XR panel sales will reach around $600 million this year — still small compared to the much larger OLED market. However, as more companies begin production, prices are expected to drop, making XR devices more affordable and widespread. According to Omdia’s Kimi Lin, OLEDoS prices are falling quickly — from $25 this year to $17 by 2026.
