Samsung continues to grow its presence in the global media market through Samsung TV Plus. The streaming platform recently surpassed 100 million monthly active users worldwide. This is a big milestone in its evolution from a pre-installed free TV channel to an independent media platform. The company now shares the story of how TV Plus has become a popular free ad-supported streaming (FAST) service.

Samsung TV Plus redefines the free streaming experience

Launched in 2015, Samsung TV Plus lets users watch live channels and on-demand content without signing up for free. The platform comes pre-installed on the company’s smart TVs, so users can access entertainment the moment they turn on their TVs. It is also available on Galaxy devices, Samsung Smart Monitor, and Family Hub.

In October 2024, Samsung TV Plus had 88 million monthly active users. Since then (about a year and two months), the platform has added 12 million more users. While the service initially offered free TV channels, American broadcasters flooding into the FAST market allowed it to transform into an independent media platform.

As of now, Samsung TV Plus offers around 4,300 channels and 66,000 videos on demand (VOD) in 30 countries. The platform features popular creators’ channels like “Pani Bottle” and “Hip Euddeum” for its travel and fitness content. Thanks to its broader premium K-content lineup, it becomes one of the largest K-content providers in the US. The company has also remastered classic dramas from the 2000s using AI to improve picture and sound quality.

In South Korea, Samsung TV Plus users can now watch major TV channels and content that were usually available only through terrestrial broadcasts and existing IPTV services. On top of that, users don’t need extra equipment or complicated setups. This makes it a convenient alternative to paid broadcasting services.

“Samsung TV Plus has transformed into a global media platform that seamlessly integrates into the daily lives of viewers worldwide,” said Choi Joon-hun, Head of the TV Plus Group from Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics. “Moving forward, we will continue to strengthen our distinct competitive edge in the FAST market by diversifying channels and securing premium content.”
