Is the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE’s $899 Price Tag Justified?

At Unpacked on Wednesday, Samsung introduced its first-ever Fan Edition foldable — the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. Marketed as a more accessible entry point into the world of Galaxy foldables, it was expected to offer flagship-like features at a friendlier price. But with a launch price of $899, many are wondering if it truly delivers on that promise. So, is the price tag justified? Let’s take a closer look.
Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is a Flip 6 in disguise, with a downgrade inside
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is more or less a rebadged Flip 6. The design and display are nearly identical, and even the camera hardware carries over unchanged. The one big difference? Samsung swapped the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for its in-house Exynos 2400 chip. While it’s a capable processor and not a massive downgrade in terms of day-to-day performance, there’s no denying it’s a step back from what the Snapdragon variant offers. Moreover, the Flip 7 FE has only 8GB of RAM, while the Flip 6 boasts 12GB of RAM.
On the bright side, the Fan Edition model comes with Android 16 and One UI 8 out of the box, giving it a head start in Samsung’s software update timeline. That means its seven promised major OS upgrades will run until Android 23. The Flip 6, on the other hand, debuted with Android 14 and has only five major OS upgrades remaining.
However, that’s still plenty. Last year’s Flip has a lot of life left in it. Most people do not use the same phone for five-six years, so it’s future-proof in terms of software updates — the Flip 7 FE’s additional two years of updates don’t give it a huge advantage. And the hardware, as we saw, is identical. In fact, the Flip 6 may win that battle if we compare their sustained performance.
That makes the $899 Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE harder to justify, as you can easily find a brand-new Flip 6 at $800 or less. Had Samsung priced the Fan Edition at $799, it would’ve hit the sweet spot. It could’ve been the foldable for those who wanted the Flip experience without paying flagship prices. Instead, it now risks being overshadowed by the better-specced Flip 6, which is still widely available across various third-party retail channels.
What happened to the “Fan Edition” philosophy, Samsung?
Samsung’s Fan Edition lineup is meant to strike a smart balance between flagship features and affordable pricing. Previous FE models have offered great value by trimming a few non-essential specs while keeping the core experience intact. But the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE feels like the opposite. Instead of delivering true value, it seems to ask buyers to pay more for less. Or at best, pay more for the same experience wrapped in a new label.
Samsung’s color choices for the Flip 7 FE are equally puzzling. It’s only available in Black and White — completely at odds with the vibrant, playful colors the Fan Edition lineup is known for. There’s no denying the appeal of a more affordable foldable. But with the Flip 7 FE, Samsung may have missed the mark on what a Fan Edition should be. Unless prices drop fast — or unless Flip 6 stock completely dries up — it’s hard to recommend the Flip 7 FE at its launch price. You might be better off spending $200 more on the Galaxy Z Flip 7.
