Google May Add Audio Playback Support for Video Apps on Android Auto

A few days ago, Google confirmed that it will bring video apps to Android Auto to enhance the in-car experience. And as expected, you will be able to watch a video only when you park your vehicle, so it does not distract you while driving.
Now, the company is addressing this limitation by introducing an audio-only mode for video apps on Android Automotive OS (aka cars with Google built-in). This mode enables seamless transition from parked video playback to audio-only listening when the car is in motion. We can expect that similar functionality will also arrive on Android Auto in the future.
Google brings audio mode to video apps on Android Automotive
Google knows that people love watching videos on their in-car infotainment system. However, due to safety concerns, it does not allow Android Automotive video apps to run while the car is in motion. Now, it has found a smart way to offer both entertainment and safety to users in the car.
During a recent developer video on YouTube, Google explained, “We’re also enabling audio while driving experiences for video apps on cars with Google built-in. You can now implement seamless transitions from parked video playback to audio-only listening while driving. Suppose you’re streaming a live sports event while getting curbside pickup. Now, you can continue listening to the audio when you start to drive again.”

As of now, this feature is available through Android Automotive OS and works only on cars running Android 14 and above. The company has started an early access program, allowing app developers to manually implement the capability for seamless switching between video and audio modes.
For Android Auto users, the wait for this feature will be longer since Google has yet to make video apps available on Android Auto. Once available, you can expect this new functionality to reach the platform as well. Meanwhile, Google is gearing up to roll out Spotify Jam to in-car infotainment systems, allowing multiple people to control a shared playlist in real time. Your in-car entertainment is in for a huge upgrade soon!
