Google is enhancing the in-car experience for Android Auto users. At I/O 2025, the company revealed that it will integrate two new app categories into Android Auto — browser apps and video apps. On top of this, several new weather apps may arrive in car infotainment systems, as developers no longer require additional approval.

Google expands Android Auto with video, browser, and weather apps

In its Android Developers Blog, Google wrote, “Video apps will be supported on Android Auto, starting with phones running Android 16 on select compatible cars. If your app is already adaptive, enabling your app experience while parked only requires minimal steps to distribute to cars.”

While this information is particularly for developers, we can assume that video apps on Android Auto are right around the corner. However, you will require an Android 16 smartphone, and the apps will be available on select cars only. For safety concerns, the video apps will run only when you park your vehicle. This totally makes sense as videos can distract you while driving, even if your co-passengers are watching them.

Similarly, Google now allows developers to push their browser apps to Android Auto with almost no additional effort. This will allow users to access the web directly from their car’s infotainment system. And like video apps, browsing features will only work when you park your vehicle.

Speaking of weather apps, Google wrote in its blog post, “The Weather app category has graduated from beta: any developer can now publish weather apps to production tracks on both Android Auto and cars with Google Built-in. Before you publish your app, check that it meets the quality guidelines for weather apps.”

So, Google has now removed the requirement for additional approval, making it easier for developers to push their weather apps to Android Auto. This means we will see more weather apps in car infotainment systems in the future. It is worth noting that weather apps have been on Android Auto since early 2023, though Google approved only a few apps due to the platform’s strict guidelines.
