Samsung is making serious progress toward launching its first tri-fold smartphone, the Galaxy Z TriFold. A firmware build recently surfaced on official servers, signaling that active development is underway. While the company has yet to confirm a release date for the device, existing leaks point toward a late-2025 launch.

Firmware leak reveals ongoing development of the Galaxy Z TriFold

The emergence of a firmware build for a triple-fold device within Samsung’s internal systems is a strong indicator that the tri-fold is on its way to launch. The device may go official in select markets later this year, including the US. It features two hinges, both folding toward the inner side, creating a compact stack when folded. The middle panel houses the cover display, while the outer segments fold inward around it.

One recently uncovered Korean patent points to a “tri-cell” battery setup with one battery in each foldable segment. The sizes may vary depending on panel placement and thickness constraints. This architecture would help balance weight and energy distribution across the device while maintaining a relatively slim profile.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset should power the Galaxy Z TriFold (name not official yet), possibly with up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage. It is expected to ship with Android 16-based One UI 8, with Samsung customizing the software for its large screen. The company should introduce custom multitasking features for the tri-fold smartphone.

If executed well, this device could bridge the gap between phone and tablet, delivering a compact foldable that expands into a larger workspace, something existing foldables fall short at. While official details are scarce, leaks have painted a promising picture of the device. Hopefully, it lives up to expectations. With a firmware build appearing on Samsung’s servers, more details should surface soon.
