Galaxy Z Fold 7 May Retain Same IP48 Rating as its Predecessor

If you were hoping Samsung would improve the durability of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7, you might be in for a bit of a letdown. A fresh leak claims that the phone will retain the same IP48 rating as its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 6. This means while the new foldable will continue to offer solid water resistance, its dust protection remains limited.

Leak claims Galaxy Z Fold 7 to offer IP48 rating

Samsung’s next-generation book-style foldable phone will likely arrive with meaningful upgrades across several key areas — from design to battery life. However, when it comes to durability, particularly in terms of dust and water protection, it seems that there will be no upgrade this year.

According to a well-known tipster, @PandaFlashPro, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will carry the same IP48 rating as its predecessor. This comes as a disappointment, especially since Chinese competitor Vivo recently launched its X Fold 5 with an impressive IP58/IP59+ rating, offering strong protection against both dust and water.

While the IP48 rating on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 ensures that the device is water-resistant up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes, it only protects against large dust particles bigger than 1mm. Samsung was the first brand to offer IPX8 water resistance with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 in 2021. As foldable devices have evolved in recent years, fans were expecting the 7th-generation foldable to finally bring IP68 certification, which offers complete dust protection as well as water resistance.

However, Samsung needs to offer a better IP rating with next year’s foldable models to stay competitive in the foldable market. Other OEMs are catching up fast, bringing standout features to their foldable devices. A few days ago, a report suggested that the upcoming Pixel 10 Pro Fold might be the first foldable device to offer an IP68 rating. Meanwhile, Apple is also gearing up to launch its first foldable device next year. The foldable market is about to heat up in the coming months.
