Samsung recently pulled the wraps off the Galaxy XR, which went on sale shortly after its announcement. It runs on Android XR, Google’s newest operating system built specifically for AR and VR headsets. While there’s plenty to like about the Galaxy XR, one user has reported a potential optical issue that may cause eye strain.

A user says Galaxy XR may have an optical flaw that causes eye strain

@elnarvideo on X suggests that the Galaxy XR may have an optical flaw that causes eye strain, especially when viewing distant objects in virtual space. He noticed that the headset feels comfortable when viewing windows or objects up close. But strain starts to build when focusing on things farther away. According to him, Samsung may have moved the displays closer to the lenses to achieve the wider field of view.

While that design choice enhances immersion, it may have also pulled the focal plane closer to around 3 feet instead of the usual 4-6 feet seen in other VR headsets, he noted. That could explain the issue. When the eyes are forced to focus on a near distance while perceiving objects that appear far away, it creates a vergence-accommodation conflict. This is a well-known cause of eye fatigue in VR. Einar’s profile on X suggests he has considerable experience with XR tech, which could explain his ability to pinpoint these technicals.

Interestingly, Elnar notes that the Android XR restricts how far you can place the virtual windows. Which in turns, caps them at around 8–10 feet. While Samsung hasn’t confirmed this, it could be a deliberate move to keep visual elements within a more comfortable viewing range.

We can’t verify these claims yet as we don’t know the exact focal distance of the Galaxy XR’s optics. However, it’s true that the headset lacks a manual lens distance adjustment, also noted by UploadVR. This supports the idea that Samsung may have fixed the optical geometry to prioritize image sharpness and a wider field of view.
