Galaxy S26 Series Could Get Major 3x Zoom Camera Improvements

Samsung’s next flagship lineup is shaping up to deliver camera upgrades that go beyond simple megapixel counts. Recent leaks suggest the Galaxy S26 series could introduce a new feature dubbed “3x Zoom HDR,” aimed at significantly improving telephoto photography. However, it’s still unclear if the underlying sensor actually changes.

As with most early Galaxy leaks, the information around the telephoto camera is mixed. Some sources claim that the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra will move to a new 12MP 3x telephoto sensor, replacing the long-used 10MP unit. Others suggest Samsung is sticking with the same 10MP sensor, trimming hardware upgrades for cost management. There are even rumors of a new 10MP camera.

At this point, it’s unclear which version is accurate. What does seem consistent across reports is that Samsung is focusing heavily on software-driven improvements for its 3x zoom camera. The rumored 3x Zoom HDR feature could be the key upgrade for the Galaxy S26 series.

HDR, or High Dynamic Range, traditionally helps balance highlights and shadows in difficult lighting. Applying HDR processing directly to the 3x telephoto camera could allow Samsung to extract more detail from distant subjects, especially in scenes where zoomed photos tend to look flat, noisy, or washed out. Honestly, the 3x unit is the worst of the five cameras on the Galaxy S25 Ultra, so this is a much-needed upgrade.

Zoom photography is particularly vulnerable to exposure issues, as smaller telephoto sensors struggle with light. HDR processing at 3x could help preserve textures, maintain contrast, and improve color accuracy when shooting far-away objects. AI might play a central role, analyzing multiple frames and reconstructing detail in ways traditional zoom photography can’t.
