A day before, Samsung hosted the Galaxy Unpacked event where it took the wraps off new devices. And we might be in for another Unpacked. At January’s Unpacked, Samsung will most likely take the wraps off the Galaxy S26 series, and there might be some interesting twists at the event.

Galaxy S26+ has yet to stop by GSMA database, and that may be bad news

This year, Samsung introduced a new addition to the Galaxy S25 series, the Galaxy S25 Edge (review). It has all the bells and whistles of the flagship model but comes in an ultra-sleek form factor, measuring just 5.8mm thick and weighing 173g. That certainly makes it stand out, and rumors have been circulating that Samsung might discontinue the Plus variants in favor of the Edge. While that remains unconfirmed for now, it could mark a significant development.

The GSMA database now lists the Galaxy S26 (model SM-S942), as spotted by SammyPolice, Galaxy S26 Edge (SM-S947), and Galaxy S26 Ultra (SM-S948). Notably missing? The Galaxy S26+, which has traditionally been a staple in Samsung’s flagship S series.

In previous years, Samsung’s numbering scheme was straightforward: the base model ended with a “1,” the Plus with a “6,” and the Ultra with an “8.” For example, the Galaxy S25 series had the S25 as SM-S931, the S25+ as SM-S936, and the S25 Ultra as SM-S938. Based on this, many expected the S26 base model to be SM-S941 and the S26+ to be SM-S946. But the Galaxy S26 appears as SM-S942 in GSMA, hinting at a shift in Samsung’s approach.

This subtle change could mean Samsung is merging some of the Plus model’s features into the base S26, potentially offering a larger screen, bigger battery, or improved cameras. The Edge model, slotted between the base and Ultra, may serve as the new “middle child,” possibly replacing the Plus altogether.

Samsung has typically registered all its models in the GSMA database well ahead of launch. That’s why the absence of the S26+ at this stage suggests it might be canceled. While there’s still a chance the Plus could appear later, the odds seem slim.
