Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone may finally be in the works, and it seems Samsung will have a major hand in bringing it to life. According to a new supply chain report from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has placed a major order with Samsung Display for foldable OLED panels.

Apple reportedly ordered 8 million foldable display panels from Samsung

According to Kuo, Apple has ordered between 7 and 8 million display panels from Samsung. That suggests the company has high hopes for its upcoming foldable device. The total number of foldable iPhones (or whatever name Apple ultimately chooses) could reach between 15 and 20 million units, though that figure may be spread out over several years rather than a single launch cycle.

The foldable iPhone is still in development, and many of its components have yet to be finalized. One key part still in progress is the hinge, which is rumored to use liquidmetal for added strength and durability. On the other hand, the display appears to be much closer to completion. That component will be supplied by Samsung, which brings solid expertise from its Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip lines.

One major challenge Apple is still working to overcome is the crease. Most foldable phones show a visible line where the screen bends, but Apple reportedly wants to eliminate it entirely. That’s likely one reason it’s collaborating closely with Samsung. Samsung’s latest foldables already show less of a crease than earlier models, but Apple seems to be aiming for better.

Production could begin in late 2025 or early 2026, with mass production set for the second half of 2026. If everything stays on track, Apple’s first foldable could finally debut in 2026. It’ll be interesting to see how it stacks up against Samsung, the current heavyweight in the foldable market.
