Samsung is reportedly preparing a major shake-up for its foldable lineup. It supposedly plans to unveil three foldables — Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z “Wide” Fold, and Galaxy Z Flip 8. Renders of the first two have already been unveiled, and the difference between them isn’t just a minor tweak.

A wider design changes everything

In fact, early leaks of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide suggest the size and aspect ratio changes could completely transform how the device feels in daily use. According to a comparison from Android Headlines, the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to stick with Samsung’s familiar tall and narrow design. This design is similar to the previous Galaxy Z Fold 7 model (review here).

However, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide could take a very different approach, featuring a much wider form factor both when folded and unfolded. This means a wider cover screen and a wider inner display. There is also less of the “remote control” feel typical of Fold devices. The recent leaks suggest a 3:4 aspect ratio compared to a 6:5 aspect ratio from the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 7. This new ratio is very close to a square.

On paper, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will have a 5.4-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch main display. These are smaller screens compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Fold 8. Both those phones have a 6.5-inch cover display and an 8-inch main display. But keep in mind the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is noticeably shorter and wider than the Galaxy Z Fold 7. It is shorter and wider than the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as well.

Different camera setups, too

Both phones also have different cameras. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is expected to feature the same triple-lens configuration as the Galaxy Z Fold 7. However, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will feature a dual-camera system, likely a main 200MP sensor and an ultrawide lens. The selfie cameras should be the same on both phones.

But the key difference isn’t only size, it’s shape. The Wide version feels more like a small tablet and improves multitasking and split-screen apps. It also makes video content look more natural to look at. Meanwhile, the standard Z Fold 8 prioritizes one-handed usability, keeps the familiar display, and feels more like a traditional phone when closed.

Why is Samsung making this move?

Samsung’s traditional Fold design has faced criticism for years, mainly because of its narrow cover screen. They finally fixed that with Galaxy Z Fold 7. However, while the main display is great for running split-screen apps, it’s not so great for watching videos.

The new Wide model appears to directly address that issue by offering a more practical outer display. It also includes a wider main display, perfect for watching videos or browsing the web. At the same time, it could also be Samsung’s response to intensifying competition. This includes the upcoming iPhone Fold with a wider aspect ratio.

Two different experiences, not just two sizes

What makes this lineup interesting is that Samsung isn’t just offering two sizes, it’s offering two completely different experiences. Galaxy Z Fold 8 keeps the traditional recipe, with its traditional, tall, and productivity-focused approach. Meanwhile, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is a wider, more media-friendly and tablet-like experience. This is a much bigger change than simply increasing screen size.

It’s important to note that these details come from leaks and early reports, so things could still change before launch. However, if accurate, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide could represent one of the biggest design changes in Samsung’s foldable lineup in years.
