Samsung has announced the Galaxy Z TriFold, and it goes on sale starting December 12 in its home turf, South Korea. It will be available for purchase in the US later. It may be Samsung’s most expensive phone ever, but will it steal the thunder from the Galaxy Z Fold 8 or the Galaxy Tab S series tablets? Techsponential founder and lead analyst Avi Greengart may have the answer.

So, how will Galaxy Z TriFold impact Z Fold 8 and next Galaxy Tab S series sales?

I had the same question and asked Greengart to help me understand what might happen and how it could impact the next Fold and the company’s flagship tablets. In response, Greengart said the Galaxy Z TriFold will change how people view pricing within Samsung’s foldable lineup.

He noted that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is currently the most expensive phone Samsung sells. Once the Galaxy Z TriFold arrives, that distinction will shift to the TriFold. With carrier trade-in deals and subsidies often covering $800 to $1,000 on Z Fold phones, many buyers end up paying close to half the sticker price. The same offers would make a much smaller dent in the TriFold’s expected $3,000 price tag.

Samsung Galaxy flagship Tab sales should stay safe

Greengart also does not expect the Galaxy Z TriFold to impact regular Galaxy Tab sales in any meaningful way. He believes tablets and tri-fold phones serve very different use cases.

Tablets are mostly used at home, while the Galaxy Z TriFold is designed to replace your phone first and only offer a tablet-sized screen when needed. Even so, he added that Samsung would likely be happy if the TriFold ended up replacing a tablet for some buyers.

In a bigger explanatory piece, the analyst says he doesn’t expect the Galaxy Z TriFold to sell in big numbers. Instead, it is more of a halo product that shows off Samsung’s engineering and draws attention to the rest of the foldable lineup. It also fits into Samsung’s long-term plans, especially with Apple expected to enter the foldable market next year.
