AV2 Codec Could Make Galaxy Phones More Data-Efficient When Streaming

Samsung’s future Galaxy smartphones may make streaming videos smoother and more data-efficient. The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) has recently announced the AV2 video codec, the successor to the current AV1 codec. This new technology will let you watch videos without worrying about quickly reaching your internet data limit.

The next-gen video codec may come to future Galaxy smartphones

The Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), a global collaboration of innovators, develops open standards for video, audio, still images, and immersive technologies. Since the launch of its AV1 video coding format in 2018, the consortium has seen widespread adoption across streaming platforms and consumer hardware. To further improve media experiences, it recently introduced the next evolution in open video coding: AV2, with plans to release it later this year.

Since Samsung is a member of AOMedia, we may not have to wait long to see the new codec on Galaxy devices. The upcoming Galaxy smartphones, expected later next year or early 2027, will likely adopt the AV2 codec. This could include the upcoming high-end devices such as the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy S27 Ultra.

Of course, this is an educated guess, but one thing is certain: when it arrives, AV2 will make streaming on Galaxy phones smoother than ever before while using less data. Note that streaming platforms like Netflix, YouTube also need to encode the format in their content for users to fully benefit from it.

AV2 is a major leap in open video coding, delivering significantly better compression performance than AV1. It also supports AR/ VR apps, split-screen delivery of multiple programs, and improved handling of screen content. The best thing is that it works over a wider visual quality range, meaning you get the flexibility to choose different resolutions.
