Samsung is taking a cautious approach with its latest clamshell foldable, the Galaxy Z Flip 7. The company will reportedly use Micron’s LPDDR5X RAM only, despite having its own DS division memory available. This move is reportedly to prevent potential overheating when in-house DRAM is paired with its Exynos 2500 chip. Pretty odd that two in-house products don’t play along well.

Galaxy Z Flip 7 may skip in-house DRAM to prevent overheating issues

Last month, a report suggested that Samsung may increase the use of Micron memory in its premium Galaxy devices. It looks like the Korean firm has agreed to use American memory maker’s DRAM in its latest Flip smartphone. According to a report from DealSite, Samsung’s MX division plans to equip the Galaxy Z Flip 7 with 100% LPDDR5X from Micron. That’s quite surprising, as the company usually combines DRAM from different suppliers instead of relying on just a single supplier.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Samsung has relied fully on a third-party supplier. Micron was also the primary memory provider for the Galaxy S25 series during the initial few months. However, the company recently lowered Micron’s share to 40% while increasing its own chip share to 60%.

The decision to rely fully on Micron for the Z Flip 7 is due to the heat management concerns. Samsung reportedly says that the plan may change depending on future supply chain situations, but it seems unlikely to change significantly due to compatibility issues between the chipset and DRAM. For the uninitiated, the Galaxy Flip 7 uses an in-house Exynos 2500 processor, which delivers solid performance compared to its previous generation.

Since the company found that pairing this high-performance chip with the DS division’s DRAM could cause overheating, the only way to ensure stability is to use Micron LPDDR5X RAM. “With the recent improvements to Samsung Electronics’ 3nm process, the Exynos 2500’s overheating issue has been significantly alleviated, but we still need to wait and see,” said an official from the semiconductor industry. Meanwhile, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, will pair exclusively with in-house LPDDR5X DRAM.
