With OEMs now expanding their foldable smartphone portfolio, Samsung has begun facing stiff competition. The Korean firm’s global foldable market share in terms of shipments dropped greatly in Q2 2025, just before the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 launch. The good news is that the company has a strong possibility to bounce back in the second half of the year, as its latest foldables are selling well globally.

Samsung suffered a decline in foldable smartphone shipments in Q2 2025

According to data from Counterpoint Research, Samsung secured 9% share in the global foldable smartphone shipments in Q2 2025. This is a 12% drop from the same period last year, moving the company into third spot on the shipment chart. Huawei led the market with a 45% share, all thanks to the solid demand in China for its Mate X6 foldable.

Surprisingly, Motorola also overtook Samsung to secure second position in Q2 2025. The company’s shipment share increased from 14% to 28%, suggesting it has expanded its presence in the foldable smartphone market. Thanks to Motorola’s latest RAZR 60 series, it saw a significant growth in the United States. Priced at $699, these clamshell models are an affordable entry point for first-time buyers.

While Samsung saw a drop in shipments in the second quarter, the research firm expects the company will recover in the coming months. “Samsung is expected to post strong performance in the third quarter as the Galaxy Fold 7 series is receiving particularly good responses compared to its predecessor,” said Counterpoint Research Director Jene Park. “The ultra-premium foldable form factor is showing strength again, with sales more than doubling compared to the Galaxy Fold 6 last year during the same period.”

Last week, a report said that Samsung has increased the production volume of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 by 60,000 units this month. The company also aims to ship a total of 2.4 million units of the new book-style foldable this year, which is 200,000 units more than last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 shipments.
