Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 has just begun reaching early buyers, but reports are already painting a picture of what to expect from its successor — the Galaxy Z Fold 8. According to a new report originating in Korea, the company is exploring a new backplate material mix for the next Fold. The 2026 model could include both Titanium and CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics).

Galaxy Z Fold 8 may use a mix of Titanium and CFRP for its backplate

Backplate is a support structure under the display of foldable devices. Last year, Samsung introduced a titanium backplate with the Galaxy Z Fold SE, contributing to its improved rigidity and impressive thinness. The company improved things with the Fold 7, making it even slimmer and lighter. However, it is reportedly facing difficulties sourcing titanium due to various geopolitical issues.

While titanium offers structural advantages, Samsung is already evaluating other options. A TheElec report claims that the company may return to CFRP (earlier foldables used this material for their backplates) if these uncertainties in the global supply chain persist. The situation hinges on how the ongoing US-China trade dispute unfolds. Since a significant portion of titanium supply flows through China, future availability could be at risk.

CFRP, on the other hand, is easier to secure and has a proven track record. If Samsung encounters major issues in sourcing titanium, it could equip the Galaxy Z Fold 8 with a CFRP backplate. Otherwise, we could see a mix of the two materials. Hopefully, this doesn’t lead to a thicker build, as the Fold 7’s ultra-slim design gives it a competitive edge.

S Pen may return after just a year away

Alongside the potential material changes, there’s another development that could excite longtime fans. Samsung is considering bringing back S Pen support to the Fold line. The company dropped stylus compatibility on the Fold 7 to prioritize thinness, removing the digitizer film entirely. However, it is now working on a new display tech that can support stylus input without a traditional digitizer, which could make its debut on the Fold 8.

This would mark a new chapter for the Fold series, which first gained S Pen support with the Fold 3 but lost it after the Fold 6. Samsung executives have hinted that if consumer demand is strong enough, S Pen could return in a more efficient, less space-consuming form. Stay tuned as the Korean behemoth continues shaping the future of foldables, one material at a time.
