Gboard Update Restores Familiar Emoji Picker Layout in Version 15.5

Not long ago, Gboard started rolling out some changes to the emoji and GIF picker. But many didn’t like it, which is why Google is now reversing those changes, and rolling them back. The layout in question introduced large rectangular cards and a carousel system to switch between emojis, GIFs, stickers, and emoticons.

In response, Google is rolling back many of these changes in the latest Gboard 15.5 update (via 9to5Google), which is now being released to the stable channel. The emoji picker now uses a more compact layout, similar to the older version, where all categories fit on one screen. The backspace key has returned to its original location, improving ease of use.

While the design is mostly back to how it was before, some parts of the new interface remain. The headings for each section, which were updated to allow more items to fit in the top row, are still in place. However, the combined expressive page that grouped stickers and GIFs together has not returned. Depending on the device, the layout may appear slightly off, with buttons aligned to the left instead of centered.
Some newer features have also stayed. A button for AI-generated stickers, powered by Google’s Gemini model, is now available on the Pixel 9. This tool allows users to create custom stickers using prompts. It is currently limited to that device but may come to the Pixel 10 after its expected launch.
These updates appear to be handled through server-side changes rather than app version updates. So users may see the new design even if they haven’t updated the app manually. Google often tests design tweaks in beta, and this case shows how quickly the company can reverse changes if users are not happy with the results.
