Galaxy Z Fold 7 is 48% Thinner Than OG Fold — See the Full Journey

Samsung’s 2025 book-style foldable device arrives with substantial improvements over previous generations. One key area that the Korean firm has focused heavily on is the slim form factor. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a whopping 48% thinner compared to the original Galaxy Fold from 2019. The company recently highlighted the whole journey of reducing the Galaxy Z Fold lineup’s thickness with each iteration.
Galaxy Z Fold evolution: shrinking from 17.1mm to 8.9mm
Samsung entered the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the Galaxy Fold in 2019. It had a folded thickness of 17.1 mm and an unfolded thickness of 7.6 mm. Thanks to Samsung’s continued advancements in hinge engineering and product design, the latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 measures just 8.9 mm thick when folded and 4.2mm when unfolded. This makes it not only comfortable to use but also sleek and premium in appearance.
Samsung says, “While overall thickness declined by 29% across the first six generations — from the Galaxy Fold in 2019 to the Galaxy Z Fold 6 in 2024 — a significant 26% reduction was achieved in just the past year.” This shows how quickly Samsung’s foldable technology has evolved, despite the challenges of its complex form factor.

The Korean firm’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 featured the Hideaway Hinge, resulting in a reduced folded thickness of 16.8 mm and an unfolded thickness of 6.9 mm. Likewise, the Galaxy Z Fold 3 became even slimmer, with a thickness of 16.0 mm when folded and 6.4 mm when unfolded. The company achieved this considerable reduction despite introducing support for the S Pen and IPX8-rated water resistance for the first time.
With its Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung replaced the gear-based hinge with a linear movement mechanism. This allowed the company to reduce internal components and achieve a folded thickness of 15.8 mm and an unfolded thickness of 6.3 mm. As for the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the phone adopted a new Flex Hinge, replacing the traditional Hideaway Hinge. This advancement helped Samsung reduce the thickness to 13.4 mm (folded) and 6.1 mm (unfolded).
The latest model is the thinnest Samsung foldable to date
Last year, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 became even slimmer with its symmetrical dual rail hinge, measuring 12.1 mm when folded and 5.6 mm when unfolded. Finally, Samsung’s efforts to make its devices thinner have made the Galaxy Z Fold 7 the thinnest foldable ever, thanks to the Armor FlexHinge — a new structural innovation that offers superior durability and compactness.
