If you plan to unlock your Galaxy phone’s bootloader for advanced customization, you might want to think twice. You will lose access to Gemini Nano-powered AI features. Google has confirmed that unlocking the bootloader will disable these functions for security reasons.

Think twice before unlocking your Galaxy phone’s bootloader, as Gemini Nano features will stop working

Gemini Nano is Google’s smallest AI model that runs on several high-end smartphones, including select Galaxy models. The model offers a lot of on-device generative AI features without an internet connection, meaning it doesn’t send any data to Google’s servers. This gives users more private AI experiences than cloud-based solutions.

Built into Android’s AICore system service, Gemini Nano uses device hardware to enable low inference latency while keeping the model up to date. It powers a bunch of smart tools such as message reply suggestions, recording summaries, and more. However, if you unlock your phone’s bootloader, all these AI features will stop working.

Previously, Google did not clearly mention this limitation. However, the company recently quietly confirmed this in its ML Kit Gen API documentation (via TheSpAndroid). If a user unlocks the device’s bootloader, the API will stop working, and the user may see an error message. For the uninitiated, this API allows app developers to use Gemini Nano’s AI features within their own apps. These include Summarization, Proofreading, Rewrite, and Image description.

So, if you enjoy rooting your devices or installing custom ROMs, you should be aware that doing so could break Gemini Nano features. Unlocking the bootloader removes an important security layer, meaning Google considers the device as untrusted. Since Gemini Nano runs on-device, it works in a trusted environment to safeguard your data. So it makes sense that the API stops working on untrusted devices.
