With each major iteration of One UI, the Android-based platform evolves greatly in terms of performance, security, and overall user experience. However, in recent years, Samsung has shaken up its release cycle strategy with a new approach between its flagship S series and foldable devices. So, what’s the future One UI rollout strategy? Let’s find out.

Samsung may adopt a split update strategy for One UI across the Galaxy S and Z series

As you know, Samsung has not released any incremental updates for the Android 15-based One UI 7. Instead, it jumped directly to Android 16-based One UI 8, which debuted alongside the seventh-generation foldable lineup. This was possible because Google released its major OS update earlier than the usual October schedule.

So, based on current patterns, Samsung should jump from One UI 8 to One UI 9. However, there is a change in the One UI versioning strategy — Samsung will introduce One UI 8.5, based on Android 16, with the upcoming Galaxy S26 series. It will then debut One UI 9, based on Android 17, with the next generation of foldable devices in 2026.

This One UI rollout plan may continue in the future, with Samsung introducing a new software experience between its two flagship lineups. “For each generation of the Z Fold, it will receive major One UI version updates aligned with Google’s Android releases. For each generation of the S series, it will receive updates to the One UI X.5 version,” tipster @UniverseIce said on X.

The tipster further said that while both device categories will remain on the same Android platform, the X.5 version will bring significant changes to the S series, including new UI/UX designs, AI features, and software enhancements. After all, the Galaxy S lineup remains Samsung’s mainstream product, while the foldable lineup is still considered niche. Samsung will undoubtedly prioritize its S series to bring more feature-rich software experiences.
