Samsung has announced a major new development for the smart home industry. The company’s smart home platform, SmartThings, is now the first to support Matter-compatible cameras. This becomes possible for Matter 1.5, the latest version of the global smart home standard.

Samsung brings camera support to SmartThings through Matter 1.5

Developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), Matter is a universal standard for smart home devices. It aims to make devices from different brands work seamlessly. With the release of Matter 1.5, the standard now supports smart cameras. Furthermore, it improves control of blinds, awnings, and garage doors, along with better energy management.

Samsung says it will begin rolling out SmartThings updates later this month. The updates will bring support for cameras, expanding the platform’s existing list of supported devices (lights, door locks, switches, and various sensors). As a result, users will be able to watch live video from their cameras, save and view recorded clips. They will also be able to talk through the camera using two-way audio. The system will also send motion alerts, maintain event history, and offer advanced settings for greater control. Furthermore, users will be able to set motion and privacy zones to block certain areas from view.

Initially, the camera support will be available in select SmartThings hubs, including the Aeotec Smart Home Hub, Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, and SmartThings Hub 2018. For older hubs, the company will push the update next year, making it possible for more users to enjoy Matter camera features. Samsung has teamed up with several IoT companies, including Aqara, Eve, and Ulticam, to develop Matter cameras. These devices could hit the market in March 2026

“Samsung aims to ensure that products and services built on different brands and protocols deliver a unified experience through SmartThings,” said Jaeyeon Jung, Executive Vice President and Head of SmartThings Team at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to expand our support for industry standards, including Matter, and further strengthen collaboration to drive new customer experiences.”
