Samsung’s XR Headset May Mostly Use Sony OLEDoS Panels

Samsung has kept most of the key details about its first XR headset (codenamed Project Moohan) under wraps. However, a new report recently shed light on one crucial aspect of the device: its display supplier. The Korean firm is planning to use OLEDoS displays from both Sony and Samsung Display (its own display division) in the XR headset.
Samsung is eyeing a dual-sourcing strategy for the OLEDoS screens in its XR headset
OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) is a tiny screen (about 1 inch) that deposits micro organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) on a silicon substrate. These displays are suitable for VR/AR Headsets thanks to their high pixel density and brightness. For instance, Apple’s Vision Pro features OLEDoS from Sony.
According to a report from TheElec, Samsung may adopt a dual-sourcing strategy for the OLEDoS screens in its XR headset. The publication said that Sony will be the key supplier, with Samsung Display helping as the secondary source. This move will allow the Korean company to increase the stability of its supply chain as well as maintain price negotiation power.
Furthermore, it will provide Samsung Display with an opportunity to showcase its own display technology in real-world XR products. Samsung Display has recently announced several XR headset-ready OLEDoS panels. Its latest panel has a 120Hz refresh rate, 5,000 PPI pixel density, and a peak brightness of a whopping 15,000 nits.
It’s unclear which OLEDoS panel Samsung Display will supply, or if the company is developing a new panel specifically for the Project Moohan. As for Sony, an earlier report revealed that it will supply its flagship OLEDoS display — it measures 1.3 inches with a pixel density of about 3800 PPI.
As far as launch is concerned, Samsung will reportedly unveil the XR headset on September 29 at an event in South Korea. It will be available for purchase in the Korean market starting October 13, with the global market to follow later. Pricing has also been tipped — it could cost anywhere between $2,000 and $3,000. The device could make an appearance at Samsung’s upcoming Unpacked on July 9.
