Samsung reportedly plans to make more Galaxy Z Fold 8 units than Galaxy Z Flip 8 this year. This shows the company is confident that its next-gen book-style foldable will see stronger demand than the clamshell-style model. It will be the first time since 2021 that Fold production surpasses Flip from the planning stage.

Samsung is leaning toward the Galaxy Z Fold 8 due to strong Fold 7 sales

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8 could bring new features and improvements that could reshape the foldable phone market. According to a report from ETNews, the Korean firm plans to make around 3.5 million Fold 8 units and 2.5 to 3 million Flip 8 units this year. The decision to make more Folds is likely because of the strong sales performance of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which surpassed expectations last year.

Consumers praised the Galaxy Z Fold 7 for its larger screen, lighter and slimmer profile, despite carrying a steep price tag. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 offers a larger cover display, a bigger battery, and a more compact design, making it a solid option for those who prefer smaller foldables.

Last year, Samsung reportedly shipped more than 6 million units of the Fold 7 and Flip 7, with the former accounting for the majority of shipments. “The Fold 7 is essentially the first Fold to increase shipments through reorders,” said an industry insider. “They are trying to detect changes in foldable demand and increase the proportion of Fold production starting with the Fold 8.”

In 2024, Samsung reportedly shipped less than 5.5 million units of Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Galaxy Z Fold 6. At the time, Flips accounted for around 60% of the total foldable shipments. However, the success of the Fold 7 has shaken up the company’s next-gen foldable production strategy. Moreover, the Fold 8 may feature a creaseless display thanks to a new dual-UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) design. Meanwhile, the Korean firm plans to make around 1 million units of the rumored Galaxy Wide Fold this year.
