Samsung Supports Korea’s AI Ambitions Through GPU Working Group

The South Korean government recently formed a high-level GPU Working Group to boost the country’s AI capabilities. Samsung is also part of the group, alongside other top tech companies like Hyundai Motor, SK Telecom, and Naver. The group will coordinate the procurement of 260,000 advanced Nvidia GPUs. These GPUs will play a key role in running large-scale AI applications and building advanced data centers.
The GPU Working Group aims to elevate Korea into the ranks of global AI powerhouses
Last month, Nvidia announced it would deploy up to 260,000 GPUs to South Korea to help build AI factories there. The company said that this will increase the country’s total installed AI GPU capacity from around 65,000 units to more than 300,000. This will make South Korea one of the world’s largest AI computing hubs outside the US. However, for this effort, the government needs help from major domestic tech companies.
According to a report from The Korea Herald, the Ministry of Science and ICT has now announced the launch of a GPU Working Group. Under the plan, the government will secure 50,000 GPUs, while the participating companies (including Samsung) will jointly receive 210,000 units. These GPUs will help hyperscale data centers to integrate AI into manufacturing, robotics, logistics, and mobility.
Led by the ministry’s AI Infrastructure Bureau, the group will plan implementation roadmaps, share procurement strategies, and outline medium- and long-term measures. There will be senior-level sessions when important strategic decisions are needed, ensuring close coordination between the government and industry.
“The launch of the GPU Working Group is a direct follow-up to President Lee’s engagements with Nvidia and global AI firms at APEC,” said Vice Minister Ryu Je-myung at the Ministry of Science and ICT. “Securing cutting-edge, large-scale GPUs — the essential infrastructure of the AI era — signals Korea’s shift into a phase of practical cooperation aimed at delivering tangible results.”
