Samsung Removed S Pen from Fold 7, Now Working on a Better Solution

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 represents a bold step forward in Samsung’s foldable lineup, but not without some trade-offs. In pursuit of a slimmer and lighter design, the company removed S Pen support from the new model. While the sleeker form factor has earned praise, the decision has also sparked disappointment among long-time S Pen users. The good news is that Samsung is already working on ways to bring the stylus back in future Fold devices.

S Pen is missing from the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but it may return in the future
Samsung has long marketed the Galaxy Z Fold series as productivity-focused, with the large inner screen serving as a mini-tablet. S Pen support added to that appeal, especially for note-takers, artists, and multitaskers. However, the digitizer required for S Pen input adds thickness and weight to the device, something Samsung aimed to eliminate with the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
According to the company, removing the S Pen support was necessary to create a thinner and lighter foldable. And indeed, the Fold 7 is Samsung’s slimmest foldable yet, measuring just 4.2mm when unfolded and 8.9mm when folded. It is also incredibly lightweight at 215 grams, making it more pocket-friendly and appealing to mainstream consumers. Thankfully, the S Pen may return in the future without adding the bulk.
In a recent statement reported by ETNews, Kang Min-seok, executive director of Samsung’s MX business division, confirmed that the S Pen is not gone forever. Samsung is actively researching more advanced stylus technologies that could eliminate the need for a separate digitizer.
Kang explained that Samsung will reintroduce S Pen support only when two conditions are met: the new technology must meet its performance standards, and there must be clear demand from consumers. If rumors are anything to go by, the Korean firm has already developed a digitizer-free S Pen. However, the company stopped short of its mass production because of various issues.
Samsung has reportedly teamed up with HiDeep, a South Korean company specializing in alternative stylus input methods, for its digitizer-free S Pen. Time will tell whether it manages to address all current issues and bring back the S Pen with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 next year.
