Samsung has been using its 200MP camera sensor on the “Ultra” model of its flagship Galaxy S series since 2023. And it may continue using the same camera in the upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra as well. While this sensor has proven to deliver excellent photos, Samsung may need to go beyond 200MP in the future if it wants to stay competitive in the market. A fresh leak recently revealed that Apple is testing a 200MP main camera for its future iPhones.

The future iPhones may feature a 200MP main camera

Apple may launch the iPhone 17 series in fall 2025, if everything goes on schedule. The company will retain 48MP camera in the upcoming lineup, but may be planning to upgrade in future iPhones. Noted tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo claimed that Apple is testing a 200MP camera sensor, most likely for the main camera unit. This suggests Apple wants to compete with Samsung by offering a similar megapixel count on its future flagship models.

Traditionally, Apple has focused on improving photo quality through better sensors and software optimization rather than just increasing the megapixel count. Now that Apple plans to join the race for higher megapixel cameras, Samsung should also start planning beyond its 200MP camera for its flagship smartphones.

The Korean firm first integrated its 200MP sensor called ISOCELL HP2 in the Galaxy S23 Ultra. This sensor enhances capacity for maximum pixel performance, enabling detailed and seamless photos in any lighting condition. The same sensor can also be found in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, Galaxy S25 Ultra, and even the newly launched Galaxy S25 Edge. But now it’s high time for Samsung to consider taking the next big step in mobile camera technology.

Previous reports suggested that Samsung is working on 320MP and 500MP sensors for its future Galaxy devices. However, the company has no plans to use either of these sensors in the next-generation Galaxy S26 Ultra. It will be interesting to see if the firm adopts them once Apple enters the 200MP camera race.
