Samsung may enter the display-less smart glasses market to secure an early position in the emerging wearable segment. The Korean firm is reportedly developing its own AI glasses, with plans to launch as early as the end of next year. If true, it would compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban Meta, which debuted in 2021.

Samsung is gearing up to introduce display-less smart glasses

While Samsung’s upcoming smart glasses won’t feature a display, they will have speakers, a microphone, and a camera, similar to the Ray-Ban Meta. Note that this product is different from the AR glasses Samsung is developing with Google. AR glasses have displays to show information and media content. The Google collaboration could be debuted under Google’s name, while Samsung’s smart glasses will carry the Samsung brand.

According to Sedaily, Samsung sees smart glasses as the next-generation device after smartphones. While smartphones have become powerful AI companions, smartglasses offer hands-free use and the ability to share the user’s view in real time. Initially, the industry considered smartglasses just an accessory, but the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022 changed that perception.

Since these smartglasses do not feature a display, they also come at a reasonable price. For example, Meta’s display-less smart glasses start at $299 while Xiaomi’s newly launched AI glasses retail at 1,999 yuan (around $279). Industry analysts expect that Samsung may face competition with Google in the future. As a result, beyond its partnership with the Mountain View company, Samsung is developing its own smart glasses to introduce a separate product lineup.

While Samsung is responsible for the hardware portion of its partnership with Google, Google also conducts internal hardware research and prepares for the future, so Samsung must also develop its own brand. Samsung Electronics also benefits from the high compatibility with the Galaxy ecosystem, which already boasts a significant market share, including smartphones, watches, and rings,” an industry insider told the publication.
