Samsung Still Sees a Future for TriFold, Thinner Model in Works

Samsung may have pulled the plug on its first tri-fold smartphone surprisingly quickly, but that doesn’t mean the idea is dead. Fresh rumors suggest the company is still exploring new form factors, including a more advanced TriFold design. It reportedly plans to launch the new model, tentatively called the Galaxy Z TriFold 2, in mid-2027.

Samsung isn’t done with the TriFold concept yet

Samsung recently confirmed that it is ending sales of the Galaxy Z TriFold just three months after launch. This followed rumors that the company is still unsure about launching the TriFold 2 this year, suggesting that it was backing away from the category. However, new reports claim Samsung has already begun development on a successor, though it may not arrive in 2026.

The Korean firm is actively refining the hardware rather than abandoning the concept altogether. The next-generation model is reportedly lighter and thinner than the original TriFold. Samsung has already finalized much of the verification process for a new hinge system, which could play a crucial role in making the device more durable and practical for everyday use.

If current timelines hold, the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 could arrive around mid-2027. It’s expected to be slightly thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 when folded, which makes it pretty thin, considering the Fold 7 itself measures just 8.9mm. The Galaxy Z TriFold measures 12.9mm when folded, with its thinnest portion measuring just 3.9mm when unfolded. Its successor could drop to an unfolded thickness of around 3.5mm.

A broader push into hybrid form factors

Samsung’s ambitions don’t stop at tri-fold devices. The company is reportedly working on a second experimental form factor with slidable display technology. Interestingly, unlike the motorized concepts it has showcased at various tech events, this version may rely on a manual sliding mechanism. This would likely reduce complexity, improve durability, and help keep the device thinner.

When fully extended, this phone offers a 7-inch display. That said, Samsung isn’t expected to rush the device to market, if it launches at all. Current timelines point to a debut no earlier than late 2027 or early 2028. If the company is serious about bringing it to consumers, we should start seeing more consistent leaks and prototypes surface in the months ahead.
