Predictive Back Gesture Spotted in One UI 8 Internal Build

Samsung is working to enhance gesture navigation in One UI 8, and one of the most exciting additions is the predictive back gesture. Although the feature is not yet available in the latest Beta 2 release, it has been spotted in an unreleased internal build, signaling that its public rollout may not be far off.

One UI 8 will offer predictive back gesture through Samsung Labs

The predictive back gesture is part of Android’s evolving navigation system and aims to make gesture controls more intuitive. Traditionally, when you swipe back on Android, the system immediately executes the action, often taking you to the previous screen or closing the current app.

With predictive back, the OS gives you a visual preview of what will happen before you complete the gesture. For example, when you swipe from the edge of the screen, a small animation or overlay may show whether you’re going back within the app or exiting it entirely. This helps reduce accidental exits and gives users more control over what the back gesture does, enhancing the overall experience.

With One UI 8, Samsung is bringing a custom version of predictive back gesture to Galaxy phones. Internally, the company refers to this feature as “back swipe preview.” It is developing the feature as an experimental option under the Labs section in One UI. Labs is Samsung’s playground for testing out advanced or in-development features before fully integrating them into the system.

As said earlier, the feature isn’t available yet in the current public One UI 8 beta builds. However, its presence in internal firmware hints that Samsung is close to finalizing it. As our own @GerwinvGiessen confirms, the feature works as intended across several apps. The company may roll it out with the next beta build, which will be Beta 3. Or maybe it will be introduced with the stable build; we shall find out in the coming weeks.
