Only One Galaxy S21 Model Gets One UI 8 — And It’s Not the One You Think

Starting next month, Samsung will begin upgrading millions of Galaxy devices to Android 16 with One UI 8. Unfortunately, most Galaxy S21 owners won’t make the cut. The only model in the lineup getting the update is the most affordable one, the Galaxy S21 FE. If you own a Galaxy S21, S21+, or S21 Ultra, the journey ends on One UI 7. And the reason has nothing to do with performance — it’s all about timing.
Why Galaxy S21 FE gets One UI 8 but other S21 models don’t
On paper, the Galaxy S21 FE isn’t vastly different from the rest of the S21 lineup. All four models share the same Exynos or Snapdragon chipsets, with the main distinctions being in camera configurations and build materials. The FE model is basically the entry-level flagship with slightly less powerful cameras and a few other compromises. Performance-wise, they’re equals.
So why does the Galaxy S21 FE get Android 16/One UI 8 while the original S21 trio doesn’t? It’s all about the release timeline. Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S21 flagships in January 2021, preloaded with Android 11. The Galaxy S21 FE, however, faced delays — originally planned for late 2021, it didn’t launch until January 2022. By then, Android 12 was already standard, so the FE shipped with the newer OS.
Now comes Samsung’s update policy comes into play. Flagship Galaxy devices launched before 2024 are eligible for four major Android OS upgrades and five years of security patches. This means the Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra end their lives on Android 15, while the S21 FE goes on to receive Android 16 as its final OS update. It’s a simple case of the FE starting a year later in the update cycle, giving it an extra OS version in the long run.
While One UI 7 already brought a refreshed design and smoother animations, One UI 8 is set to refine the experience further. Expect more streamlined menus, improved multitasking tools, and subtle system-wide enhancements that make the OS feel faster and cleaner. Testing for the Galaxy S21 FE is already underway, with the rollout expected sometime in October or November.
