It’s no secret that Samsung is preparing another major Android 16-based software update, One UI 8.5. The new version will bring visual improvement across the board while introducing a bunch of new features. One of the notable changes is coming to the Gallery photo editor, where Samsung has tweaked the implementation of the Object Eraser feature. The company appears to have integrated this feature into Generative Edit instead of keeping it as a standalone tool.

Object Eraser is no longer a standalone tool in One UI 8.5

Right now, when you open a photo in the Gallery app and tap the pencil icon, the manual editor opens. It gives you access to a host of tools, including the Object Eraser. For the uninitiated, the tool lets you instantly remove objects from your photos. This is particularly helpful when you want to erase unwanted subjects while keeping the photo looking natural.

With the upcoming One UI 8.5, Samsung is changing how this process works. Instead of offering Object Eraser as a separate option, the company has merged it with Generative Edit, aka Photo Assist, part of Galaxy AI. As you can see in the video below, the manual editor now shows an AI icon. Tapping it opens the Generative Edit interface, where you can use the object removal function. This is already possible in One UI 8, but you also get a standalone Object Eraser.

However, Samsung isn’t completely getting rid of the old system. You will be able to turn on the Object Eraser right from the Photo Editor settings. The description reads, “Show the legacy Object eraser tool in addition to the new Photo assist eraser.”

The new editing interface is currently available on the latest internal One UI 8.5 build. Rumors suggest Samsung may open a beta program for the upcoming Android 16-based software by the end of this year. The company will then officially debut it alongside the Galaxy S26 series, expected in January or February 2026. While you wait, you can check out all the latest features and improvements revealed so far in our One UI 8.5 coverage.
