Even though you can use Galaxy AI for translations, I prefer to stick with Google Translate because it works much better, even if you are using a budget device or have not upgraded in a while. Google is also putting Gemini to good use in Google Translate, making translations sound more like something a human would say.

Google Translate hasn’t seen an update this major in a while, and Gemini is the reason

The biggest change is how Translate handles phrases that do not work well with direct, word-by-word translation. Idioms, slang, and local expressions are now interpreted based on context. Popular phrases like “set the stage on fire” are translated for their meaning rather than their literal words. Gemini analyzes the sentence as a whole and delivers a more natural result in Google Translate.

Google Translate update

This improved text translation is rolling out starting today in the US and India. It works across the Google Translate app on Android and iOS, the web, and Google Search. At launch, it supports English translations with nearly 20 languages, including Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and German.

Google is also expanding live translation through headphones. Instead of reading translated text on your screen, you can now hear real-time translations directly in your earbuds. The feature works by pointing your phone toward the speaker and listening as their voice is translated into your chosen language.

Google Gemini Translate

Powered by Gemini’s native audio models, the system aims to preserve tone, pacing, and emphasis so conversations are easier to follow. This feature is rolling out in beta on Android starting today in the US, Mexico, and India. It supports more than 70 languages and works with any brand of headphones.

Beyond translation, Google is also pushing Translate further into language learning. The app now offers better pronunciation feedback and introduces daily streak tracking to encourage consistent practice. These learning tools are expanding to around 20 additional countries, including India, Germany, Sweden, and Taiwan.
