Google Chrome Rolling Out Material 3 Expressive Design [U: Wide Release]

UPDATE (October 27, 2025): A few weeks after initial release, Google has now widely rolled out the Material 3 Expressive design for Chrome on Android devices. The latest update (version 141 or newer) for the app should bring the new look to your phone. You can update Google Chrome from the Play Store. The original article, published on September 1, 2025, follows.
Google is now rolling out the Material 3 Expressive design in Chrome for Android. This comes just after Google updated Gmail and Google Keep. Now, it’s the browser’s turn to get some attention. Folks at 9to5Google spotted Chrome sporting the new Material 3 Expressive design over the weekend, and it comes with several noticeable aesthetic updates.

One of the first changes you will see is the redesigned loading animation. Instead of the familiar straight bar that fills from left to right, Chrome now uses a segmented progress indicator with rounded corners. It is a subtle tweak, but one that aligns Chrome with Google’s broader push toward softer, friendlier shapes.

Menus have also become easier to navigate. Tapping the three-dot button in the top corner now brings up core tools such as forward, bookmarking, and downloads inside bold circular icons. By surfacing these common actions at the top of the menu, Chrome makes them easier to spot and clearly separates them from the longer list of options below.
The tab switcher has received a touch-up as well. The familiar grid now places the “new tab” button inside its own square container, with Incognito and tab group controls following the same style. Tab Groups themselves have been slightly reworked. Earlier builds used solid-colored cards, while newer versions either highlight the outline or fill the group card with the chosen color, depending on the release.
Beyond these updates, the browser feels much the same. Settings menus and list-heavy pages have not been redesigned yet, keeping Chrome’s structure familiar even as individual elements adopt the refreshed look. According to the outlet, the Material 3 Expressive design is rolling out in Chrome version 139. But the rollout seems gradual, as we don’t have the new features yet.
