Gmail in Material 3 Expressive Design Now Rolling Out to Some Users

The latest Material 3 Expressive design has already made its way into several Google apps. As a result, we’ve had early glimpses of Files by Google, Drive, Calendar, and Meet. And now, Gmail is reportedly rolling out the fresh Material 3 Expressive design for some users.
Here’s the Gmail app wearing Material 3 Expressive style coat
At Google I/O a few days ago, Google pulled back the curtains on some of its apps flaunting the Material 3 Expressive design. And now, it seems the redesigned Gmail is already rolling out. Google is giving Gmail a fresh new look as part of its broader push to update apps with the Material 3 Expressive design language, ahead of Android 16’s official debut. The latest Gmail v2025.05.11 (via Android Authority) introduces bold colors, smoother animations, and a card-based layout.
As you can see in the screenshots, the most noticeable change is the new card-style user interface. Instead of the previous flat, single-sheet design, Gmail’s main email list now sits on a distinct card with rounded corners, adding a sense of depth and separation. The Compose button has been revamped as well, now featuring a thicker font and a solid pencil icon, giving it a stronger visual presence.
Swiping gestures in Gmail now trigger a pill-shaped animation that complements the motion. Notifications also peel away with a sleek new animation and subtle haptic feedback, enhancing the overall user experience.
The search bar has also been tweaked. It now appears slimmer, with the profile picture moved to a separate spot, creating a cleaner and more spacious layout. Meanwhile, the bottom navigation bar has been slightly enlarged, making the Meet and Email icons more prominent.
This update is rolling out gradually via server-side changes, so not all Gmail users will see it right away. But it’s safe to say that it won’t be long now, as the rollout continues.
