Android users can now get faster and better help during emergencies. Google recently introduced Emergency Live Video, a feature that lets users share live video from their phones with emergency responders. This feature is currently rolling out in the US and select regions of Germany and Mexico. It works on Android 8 or higher phones with Google Play services.

Android users can now share live video during emergencies

Emergencies such as a car accident, a medical crisis, or a fire can happen anytime, anywhere. In such situations, you might find it difficult to explain to responders exactly what is happening, particularly when you are stressed or injured. Thanks to the Emergency Live Video feature, you can now give responders a real-time view of the situation.

When you are on an emergency call or text, you will receive a request from the dispatcher (if they send) to share live video. A prompt will show up on your screen saying, “Share Live video? Emergency services will be able to view and record video of this event using your camera.” Now tap the Share button and then start streaming your phone’s camera feed. If you do not want to share, you can tap the No thanks button on the prompt.

Furthermore, even after you start sharing, you remain in control of your video. Simply press the Stop sharing button to stop at any time. The feature encrypts your video by default for privacy. Google says Emergency Live Video will allow responders to quickly assess the situation and get you the right help in the moment. For example, they can guide someone through life-saving steps, such as CPR, until help arrives.

This feature works alongside Google’s other safety tools. For example, Emergency Location Service helps responders find your precise location quickly. Car Crash and Fall Detection can automatically alert emergency services if something happens to you. These features should give users more peace of mind during emergencies.
