Samsung just launched its first triple-panel foldable device, the Galaxy Z TriFold. Its dual-hinge design folds inward at different radii, meaning one section must close before the other. This setup could easily lead to incorrect folding attempts. To prevent damage, Samsung has built in a safety system that issues on-screen alerts and haptic warnings whenever you fold the device the wrong way.

Samsung’s triple-panel foldable phone comes with safety alerts

The Galaxy Z TriFold uses three connected panels and a dual-hinge system, which makes the folding process different from Galaxy Z Fold models. Samsung has precisely engineered the folding mechanism for easy opening and closing. The device features a 10-inch main screen for immersive experiences and a 6.5-inch cover display for quick access when folded.

The inward folding design ensures the main screen remains protected from scratches in the folded state. To use the TriFold’s cover screen from tablet mode, you must fold the left panel first, followed by the right panel. But what if you attempt to fold the panels the wrong way, i.e, you fold the right part first and then the left part? An auto-alarm system will warn you of incorrect folding through a series of on-screen alerts and vibrations, as mentioned above. This is a meaningful feature given the phone’s complex triple-panel design.

Samsung did not explain what exactly happens when putting pressure in the wrong direction. However, it appears to want to avoid any risk of damage to the hinge or other components of the device. Meanwhile, for long-term reliability, the Galaxy Z TriFold’s main screen went through a 200,000-cycle multi-folding test. This is roughly the equivalent of folding the phone 100 times a day for five years.

Furthermore, the Galaxy Z TriFold uses durable materials to support its complex folding design. The hinge housings are made of titanium, while the Advanced Armor Aluminum frame offers device rigidity. Likewise, its dual-rail hinge structure ensures stable folding across all three panels.
