Samsung is gearing up to implement a new display technology in its next-gen foldable smartphones. The company may use a new dual-UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) design in its upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8. This design could allow the foldable to achieve a creaseless display, reducing the visible fold line compared to previous models.

Samsung combines dual-UTG and metal support for creaseless display

Samsung revealed its creaseless OLED display solution at CES 2026. We already learned that this innovation is based on a laser-perforated metal support layer below the OLED panel. The layer features tiny holes that help spread stress across a wider area during screen folding. Because the stress doesn’t remain in a single line, no visible crease forms.

However, Samsung appears to combined it with the dual-UTG design for better results. According to a report from Dealsite, the Korean firm has increased the number of ultra-thin glass layers from one to two. Previously, foldable phones used only a single UTG layer on top of the screen. Now it will feature a second layer at the bottom of the panel to greatly reduce creasing.

Samsung reportedly claims that the new design offers a 20% improvement in crease depth compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7. This means the fold line will be less noticeable on the next-generation Galaxy Z Fold 8. Meanwhile, Apple will also use a creaseless display in its first foldable iPhone. However, industry insiders say “the panels that Samsung Display supplies to Samsung Electronics and the panels that it supplies to Apple will not be the same.”

Basically, Samsung is using a metal support plate, while Apple is reportedly using glass. This means the crease-reduction outcome could differ between the two upcoming devices. It is worth mentioning that the industry initially expected a dual UTG structure for Apple’s foldable iPhone panels only. However, the Korean firm has now reportedly decided to use the same design for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 as well. The reason is that UTG is made of glass, which is relatively inexpensive compared to other materials and easy to integrate with a display.
