Galaxy Watch 4 Gets One UI 8 Watch — But Will it See More Updates?

Earlier this week, Samsung released the One UI 8 Watch update for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. The update isn’t yet available globally, but it’s just a matter of time now. Sooner or later, all Watch 4 users will receive the Wear OS 6-based platform with tons of new features and enhancements. While that’s good news, it also comes with an important caveat. This marks the end of the road for major upgrades for the Watch 4 lineup.
One UI 8 Watch update is bittersweet for Galaxy Watch 4 users
Launched in 2021, the Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic marked a turning point for Samsung’s wearables. They were the company’s first smartwatches to run the new Wear OS, switching from Tizen OS. Born out of a close collaboration with Google, this transition helped redefine what Galaxy watches could be.
Four years later, that milestone generation is reaching the end of its journey. The Galaxy Watch 4 lineup has lived through Samsung’s major software update cycle, and One UI 8 Watch stands as the final feature update these watches will receive. Security and stability updates may continue for a while, but new features and platform upgrades are now off the table.
To be honest, getting One UI 8 Watch before support ends feels like a proper send-off for the Watch 4 lineup. Unlike Android OS, Wear OS doesn’t have an annual release cycle. As such, Samsung said it will provide feature updates to these watches for four years, rather than four generations of Wear OS releases. That promised support period ended several months before One UI 8 Watch debuted, yet the company pushed the update.
But going forward, we expect a few security releases and nothing more. Even security updates may stop coming sometime in 2026. It’s high time Galaxy Watch 4 and Watch 4 Classic users consider upgrading to a newer model. Samsung’s latest launches include the Galaxy Watch 8, Watch 8 Classic, and Watch Ultra. You may save a few dollars with trade-in options for your aging Watch 4.
What about the Galaxy Watch FE?
Released in 2024, the Galaxy Watch FE is essentially a rebadged Watch 4. It has already received One UI 8 Watch and should be eligible for additional feature updates for at least a couple more years. That alone suggests the Watch 4’s hardware is still capable of handling future Wear OS and One UI Watch upgrades. The big question is whether Samsung will draw a hard line despite the shared hardware and leave the original Watch 4 behind, or surprise users with a few extra updates down the road. For now, your guess is as good as ours.
