Yesterday, a report emerged that Samsung may equip the non-Ultra Galaxy S26 models with a new main camera. While the resolution may still be 50MP, the sensor itself is expected to be brand new. We now have additional details, and there’s an unexpected twist: the Galaxy S26 Edge may also adopt this 50MP sensor. This would actually be a downgrade from the 200MP main camera featured on the S25 Edge.

Galaxy S26 and S26 Edge may feature a 50MP Sony camera

The last three generations of Samsung’s non-Ultra flagships feature the ISOCELL GN3 50MP camera as the primary shooter. Both the base and Plus models of Galaxy S23, S24, and S25 use the same sensor, while the Ultra model gets a 200MP camera. The company may finally change that next year, upgrading to a new 50MP camera.

While yesterday’s report lacked additional information on this “new” camera, X tipster @Jukanlosreve recently revealed that it will be a Sony-made 50MP sensor with 1.0µm pixels. The ISOCELL GN3 also has 1.0µm pixels, so the pixel size doesn’t change. However, the new sensor should feature upgraded internals for enhanced image quality.

Notably, both reports do not mention the Galaxy S26+. This adds weight to earlier reports that Samsung plans to replace the Plus model with the new Edge variant in its flagship lineup. In fact, the tipster says the Galaxy S26 Edge has the same 50MP Sony camera as the S26, which means a downgrade from a 200MP main camera. Perhaps Samsung will offer three lenses on the next model, including a telephoto zoom camera.

If the rumors hold, the Galaxy S26 and S26 Edge could bring the most meaningful camera upgrade in years for Samsung’s base Galaxy S models. Switching to Sony hardware could help the company compete more effectively with Chinese rivals, many of which already rely on large Sony sensors to deliver standout photo quality.
